Meet The Nissan Leaf

Filed under: What's happening at Hawkinson Nissan — Bob @ 10:34 am

The Nissan Leaf

One of the buzz cars right now in the green car movement is the all-electric Nissan Leaf. We’ve done an in-depth preview of the Leaf before via material provided by Nissan, but an ongoing tour of the Leaf around the United States recently brought it to Portland, Oregon, which is EarthTechling HQ territory. We dropped in on the Leaf and those showing it off to interested parties, asking some questions about it and generally just oooing and ahhing over the potentials this vehicle has to offer.

We later on followed up via email with Mark Perry, director of product planning, Nissan North America, and one of the leading forces at the auto manufacturer pushing the Leaf, to ask him a few questions about this electric car. Check out the next few pages of this article to see photos of the Leaf and also Perry’s answers to questions around what it will take for the Leaf to beat out other green cars like the king of the hill Toyota Prius and the upcoming Chevy Volt.

EarthTechling: Why has Nissan chosen to become involved in the niche electric vehicle market?

Mark Perry: Zero-emissions leadership is a key pillar of Nissan’s business plan. Nissan has been working on the development of lithium-ion batteries – the most important part of the electric car, since 1992. We believe the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to not produce them at all. Nissan’s zero-emissions strategy, through vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF, provide a solution for sustainable mobility.

ET: The Leaf is one of the first electric cars in recent memory which could potentially appeal to mainstream American drivers. Why do you think that is?

Perry: It’s a “real car,” with room to comfortable seat five passengers, a top speed of 90 mph, advanced technology interface and a full range of available amenities. A full charge can power the Nissan LEAF for about 100 miles, which meets the daily needs of more than 90 percent of U.S. drivers. It also will be priced affordably, with total operating costs equal to those of a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle.

ET: Compare the Leaf to the Toyota Prius and the Chevy Volt, which are two other alternative vehicles consumers have growing awareness of. What makes the Leaf better, in your opinion, than these others?

Perry: What sets Nissan LEAF apart is that it’s a zero-emission, all-electric vehicle. This means the LEAF can be totally neutral to the environment. Nissan, along with its alliance partner Renault, is the only automaker committed to bringing an electric vehicle to the mass market. (in addition to the affordability and range info mentioned before)

ET: What issues do you feel could hinder wider adoption of electric vehicles like the Leaf? How are Nissan and its partners addressing those?

Perry: Nissan is taking a holistic approach to electric vehicles and the establishment of a market for them to be sure there is a viable market for our vehicle. Globally, the Renault-Nissan Alliance has established about 30 partnerships with governments and public and private organizations, which are key to setting up the conditions needed for a zero-emission vehicle market to thrive. We are continuing to hold discussions that are leading to additional partnerships as well.

ET: In the development of the Leaf, what have been some of the biggest challenges in trying to make this vehicle what you want it to be?

Perry: Nissan’s advanced battery technology has met some of the largest challenges. By forming a joint venture company (Automotive Energy Supply Corp.) with NEC, we are able to leverage NEC’s battery-making experience with Nissan’s lithium-ion battery history dating back to the early 1990s. The battery for LEAF has half of the mass and weight and double the energy of previous lithium-ion batteries, and uses a manganese base, which also helps drive down cost.

Nissan 370Z Coupe Receives a “2010 Best Resale Value Award” from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com

The 2010 Nissan 370Z Coupe has been named Best Resale Value in its class by Kelley Blue Book’s kkb.com. The Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards recognize automakers’ outstanding achievements in producing vehicles that best retain their value.

In selecting the latest version of Nissan’s iconic Z®, the editors from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com stated:

“Regularly compared to performance coupes and convertibles that would cost you an additional five figures, the Nissan 370Z can be considered a bargain to begin with, which can be an important part of the resale value equation. Redesigned for 2009, Nissan’s latest Z® is the most powerful, most fun, most desirable iteration yet. Whether for a coastal cruise or a day at the track, we’d be happy to take one – new or used.”

The 2010 370Z Coupe, which is on sale now at Nissan dealers nationwide, is offered in two models, 370Z and 370Z Touring, each available with a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) and choice of 6-speed manual transmission with an available SynchroRev Match™ synchronized downshift rev matching system or a 7-speed automatic transmission. Hawkinson Nissan Vehicle Purchase

Filed under: What's happening at Hawkinson Nissan — Bob @ 12:44 pm

Good Afternoon,I recently purchased a 2008 Altima Coupe from Hawkinson Nissan and I would like to tell you about my experience with
your team at Hawkinson Nissan, Jay Gorzinski in particular.
When I started my search for an Altima Coupe I began at the dealership that was closest to my home, which is not Hawkinson Nissan, however the salesperson that I dealt with at the other dealership did not return my phone calls.  He assured me when we met that he would look for an Altima for me and keep me posted on his progress, I never heard from him.  I am telling you this as a testament to the outstanding customer service on the part of Hawkinson Nissan.

So, I did a search on the internet and a Hawkinson Nissan representative was the first to respond.  Being the first to respond was not what earned my business, here is what did.

On my first trip to Hawkinson Nissan I met with Jay Gorzinski, we went over the details of what I was looking for.  Jay assured me that he would make every effort to locate the car that I was looking for, however I had some very specific requests as far as color, options and my monthly payment, which limited my options.  I asked Jay to be up front with me about wether or not it was realistic of me to think that he could find a car that met all of my expectations.  Jay assured me that he and the team at Hawkinson Nissan would do their best, but at the very least he would keep in touch and keep me informed.  Jay would have Bob look for the car that I desired at Nissan auctions, but it could take some time to locate what I was looking for in my price range.
Jay contacted me later that week to let me know that they were looking, but had not found anything yet, he was keeping his promise to keep me informed.  Not only did Jay follow up with me many times, his teammates at Hawkinson NIssan did as well, creating multiple relationships within your company.  In todays economy I would think that people would be hard pressed to provide the best customer service possible in order to make a sale and create a repeat customer, but the impression left on me by the team at Hawkinson Nissan is that bad economy or not you are all about customer service and satisfaction.
I cannot express to you in words the appreciation I have for the way I was treated by EVERYONE at Hawkinson Nissan, but especially by Jay, who not only would not take credit for finding the car I purchased, but also continues to be sure that I am a satisfied customer.  Jay was thorough, friendly, informative and professional.
I can assure you that you have my loyalty when I make my next vehicle purchase, but more than that I will refer everyone I know to Hawkinson Nissan.  I am more than satisfied with my Altima, but even if I wasn’t I would find a way to purchase a different car from Hawkinson Nissan in the future because I have never in my life been treated so kindly through the car buying process.

When I came in to pick up my Altima, I was very excited as you might imagine.  Jay had all of the necessary paper work ready for me to sign, my new car was clean and ready to go.  I cannot imagine this process going any smoother than it did for me.  Prior to purchasing from Hawkinson Nissan, I dreaded the car buying process, thank you for making it such a pleasurable one.
Jay Gorzinski is an asset to your Hawkinson Nissan team, you are lucky to have him, but as I said earlier, every single employee I came in contact with at Hawkinson Nissan was kind, friendly and made me feel like I was dealing with friends not salespeople.
I work for a family owned company myself and very much enjoy the atmosphere of one, it is obvious that at Hawkinson Nissan you value that as well.
I cannot thank you enough for making my experience with Hawkinson Nissan such a pleasant one.
Looking forward to doing business with Hawkinson NIssan in the future.

Warm Regards,

Tami
